At the Indo Defense exhibition in November 2022, PT PAL CEO Kaharuddin Djenod said that the national shipyard he leads is preparing to work on the first frigate ordered by the Indonesian Navy.
The first steel cutting will be carried out in November 2022, for the construction of the ship, which is named Frigate Merah Putih, Janes wrote.
But until the end of November, this activity had not been carried out.
On December 9, 2022, photos appeared of the first steel cutting ceremony held at the PT PAL Surabaya facility.
As is well known, British defense group Babcock announced in September 2021 that it had signed a license agreement to provide the Arrowhead 140 design (also known as the Type 31 frigate) to PT PAL.
In his statement, Babcock said that this license made it possible for PT PAL to build two Arrowhead 140 warships in Indonesia with special design modifications for the Indonesian Navy.
However, several important components on the Red and White Frigates will still be imported from the British Babcock.
As for specifications, the Red and White Frigate will be 138.7 m long, 19.8 m wide, displace 5,700 tons, and have a crew of 100.
It was stated, PT PAL would work on the construction of the ship for a period of 69 months, meaning it would be delivered in 2026-2027.
