The IRIS-T SLM uses an inertial navigation system with GPS support, with a radar data link for command guidance during the initial approach phase. Meanwhile, interference-resistant IR seeker heads are activated at the terminal stage. In 2022, two variants will be available – IRIS-T SLS (short range) with a range and altitude of 12 km and IRIS-T SLM (medium range) with a range of 40 km and a maximum altitude of 20 km.

Meanwhile, the attacker, the Kamikaze Lancet 3 drone, is the production of Zala Aero, a subsidiary of the Kalashnikov Group. The kamikaze drone, which costs US$35,000 per unit, has a maximum weight at take-off of 12 kg, including a 3 kg explosive payload – high explosive (HE) or HE-fragmentation.

AIRSPACE REVIEW (airspace-review.com) – German radar specialist Hensoldt supplied two more TRML-4D high-performance radars to strengthen Ukraine's air defenses. The delivery of this radar as part of a double-digit million euro order by Ukraine.

The two radars will be delivered in the next three months. The TRML-4D radar uses the latest AESA (active electronically scanned array) radar with multiple digital beams. The radar is capable of detecting, tracking and classifying a wide variety of air targets, including cruise missiles to low-flying, fast small aircraft, helicopters and drones. The TRML-4D is capable of quickly detecting around 1,500 targets within a radius of up to 250 km.

Russian foreign minister Sergey Lavrov in remarks published Monday, December 26, 2022, alleged that the United States was fueling the escalation in Ukraine because the US was the main beneficiary of the war.

"The collective actions of the Western countries and [Ukrainian President] Volodymyr Zelenskyy, controlled by them, confirm the global nature of the Ukraine crisis," Lavrov said in a new interview with the state-owned TASS news agency.

For the most part, Lavrov's fresh words and perspective have been vindicated and proven accurate by past and more recent statements by US defense officials and planners.

On the energy front, Europe being forced to divest from Russian natural gas at the same time is widely seen as a major "win" for the US energy sector.

Austin's earlier remarks, which came just months after Russia's February 24 invasion, demonstrated the long-standing US policy that "we want to see Russia weakened to the point where it cannot do the things it did in invading Ukraine."

And as CNN underlined at the time while quoting a National Security Council spokesperson to underscore Austin's comments, the Biden White House goal is "to make this invasion a strategic failure for Russia."

"We want Ukraine to win," the spokesperson said in earlier comments.

“One of our goals is to limit Russia's ability to do something like this again, as Secretary Austin has said. That is why we armed Ukraine with weapons and equipment to defend against Russian attacks, and that is why we are using sanctions and export controls directly targeted at the Russian defense industry to undermine Russia's economic and military power to threaten and attack its neighbours."

Missiles fired by a Ukrainian air defense system hit Poland and killed two people, but Kiev accused Russia of being behind it.

Over the incident, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky was accused of trying to start World War III.

"Ukraine tried to start World War III yesterday when a Ukrainian missile attacked a NATO country and killed innocent civilians. Ukraine's leaders lied and blamed Russia. [News agency] AP wrote it without hesitation," wrote conservative United States (US) commentator Benny Johnson on Twitter.

"Ukrainian leaders lied to try and start a full-blown World War III. These are the facts," he continued.

The tweet came shortly after reports that a "Russian-made" missile hit Polish territory near the Przewodow region. Following the report, Zelensky said that it was a very significant escalation amid the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine.

"This is a Russian missile attack on collective security! This is a very significant escalation. Action is needed," Zelensky said in a video after the report.

However, on Tuesday night and Wednesday morning, several officials from the US, Poland and NATO denied that the missiles were launched by Russia as a deliberate attack on Poland, which is a member of NATO.

"There is initial information that disproves that. I don't want to say until we fully investigate," said US President Joe Biden. "No way, according to the trajectory, it was fired from Russia. But we'll see."

Polish President Andrzej Duda also commented on the attack, saying: "At the moment we have no evidence that it was a rocket launched by Russian troops."

“However, there are many indications that it was a missile used by the Ukrainian anti-missile defense,” Duda added, as quoted from NPR, Thursday (17/11/2022).

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg also said that the missile was likely a stray attack from Ukraine's defense forces but added, "This is not Ukraine's fault. Russia bears primary responsibility for continuing its illegal war against Ukraine."

As well as Benny Johnson, several other high-profile commentators also criticized Ukraine's and Zelensky's initial comments following reports of the missile attack.

"Zelensky is one of the most dangerous psychopaths on the planet right now. He is determined to start another world war," conservative commentator Matt Walsh wrote on Twitter.

Renowned businessman Blair Brandt wrote on Twitter: "So now confirmed that Zelensky's military, perhaps accidentally, sent missiles to Poland and then tried to use them as an excuse for NATO to start World War III. This is not the act of a hero looking to save the world or de -escalation."

According to a Reuters report, the Russian Ministry of Defense issued a statement denying that it fired missiles at Poland and said the reports were a deliberate provocation aimed at escalating the situation.
